I remember looking forward to Saturday afternoons to watch nationally televised Georgetown games, to see the player that I had idolized. That a lot of us idolized. Excited to see what he would do next, anticipating his jump to the NBA to see what he could do against the likes of Michael Jordan and Grant Hill. He played with such style and fearlessness. An underrated physical specimen. An athletic freak.
The way Iverson left the game was not one that most of us had imagined when he first entered the league. His strong belief in himself outweighed his stubbornness to accept a lesser role to accomplish what most professional athletes hope to attain before the end of their careers. An NBA Rookie of the Year, NBA MVP, 4 time scoring champion, 11 time All-star, 2 time NBA All-star game MVP, 3 time steals leader, 7 time All-NBA team are all accomplishments Iverson will take from the game he seemed to give so much to, despite critics.
